La Escondida

La Escondida

La Escondida - meaning 'the hidden lady' in Spanish - pays tribute to the brave women who kept mezcal traditions alive during the 18th century colonial ban. These heroic producers secretly distilled and sold their mezcal from town to town in the mountains of Oaxaca, risking everything to preserve their craft.

Founded in 2014, Grand Mezcal creates La Escondida using 100% agave espadin harvested by hand at 7-10 years of maturity. The production follows time-honored methods: agave roasted in traditional earth pits with volcanic stones, crushed by horse-drawn stone wheel, and double-distilled in small copper alembic stills reminiscent of the 1800s.

Produced in Santiago Matatlan, Mexico - the heart of mezcal country - La Escondida delivers a fruity, elegant nose with mineral notes and perfectly balanced earthy-wood character. Each bottle honors the hidden heroines who preserved this sacred tradition.
